Throw It Back to the ‘80s with Barbie Rewind! - Public News

In life, you don’t always know what’s going to make a splash. All you can do is assemble the perfect elements, give it your best The Superstar era holds a particularly special place in his heart: “Some of my favorite dolls like Dance Club Barbie, Magic Moves Barbie, and Day to Night Barbie were released during this time. So it was exciting to feel as if I was designing during that decade!” It's definitely the "speculations and lists" thread, and I do enjoy that for what it is. I also like to make wish lists and speculations etc. and to see what others say, and maybe get news about sneak peeks/leaks, whether real or not. I guess the most overlap with other threads occurs when it comes to actual news, i.e. new dolls officially showing up. But I guess we just want to make sure everyone sees these, members and non-members. If you ever teased your bangs or recorded songs from the radio, the new Barbie Rewind collection is for you. (And if you didn’t, no worries! ‘80s nostalgia is equally welcoming for all.) Designed by Javier Meabe, who grew up playing with and collecting Superstar era dolls, this totally tubular collection is a love letter to the 1980s Barbie dolls you know and love.

Vintage Reproduction dolls/Anniversary Dolls (They include the 60th Anniversary of Midge and 55th Anniversary of Christie Dolls. Teresa and PJ might also be honored with anniversary dolls, too.)

This collection also has its share of surprises. “The whole segment is inspired by Barbie’s history. I was inspired by a lot of the fashions and accessories from that decade in the Barbie portfolio,” he says. “A lot of fans will see some fun Easter eggs sprinkled in, so keep your eyes out for some totally rad details.”Okay well it's been suggested and I haven't seen one yet, so I'm just gonna go ahead and start one! The Barbie Rewind collection is as much about recreating a look as well as a feeling. Since it was ‘80s dolls in particular that sparked his interest in collecting and later designing Barbie dolls, this sense of nostalgia and authenticity was especially important to Javier. “As a Barbie designer and an avid Barbie collector, I wanted to pay tribute to a decade that is so close to my heart,” he says. “This era of dolls means so much to so many people, and it’s how many collectors (including me) got introduced to the Barbie brand.” Proudly wearing her 1985 prom queen sash, Barbie® doll takes the crown in a pink sequin dress! Dramatic chiffon overlays at the bodice and skirt add major volume.

In terms of categories of Barbies, I collect anything and everything- fashion, fantasy, cultural dolls, and icons. I get whatever triggers my brain to say, "Ooh, pretty doll. I. MUST. HAVE. IT!". If my brain doesn't say it must have it, I don't buy it. I buy dolls for the overall look. Sculpts don't make or break a doll for me (I can't tell them apart anyway). I try not to indulge in speculation so I'm not disappointed if a rumor turns out to be false. I've been burned once before by Mattel (2008 Barbie- doll of the year, not the holiday doll when they cancelled the AA doll after taking promo pics of her) and I'm still kind of upset about it. I can't wait to see what the designers come up with every year and I'll keep trying to find space for them. Definitely going for the Holiday Barbie and Dia de Muertos. I also want the Crystal Fantasy and Rewind dolls. They're the series that are holding my interest right now. Of his process, Javier shares this: “When designing for the Barbie Rewind segment, I looked at a lot of vintage Barbie catalogs from the ‘80s and referenced the most recognizable themes, fashions, and accessories. I then asked myself the question, ‘What would these dolls look like today?’ And I made sure this segment had important elements like big hair, over the top fashion, and of course, that signature Barbie look.” Silkstone Barbie Signature Pink Collection Dolls (with Carlyle Nuera taking over Robert Best with their designs, starting with Doll #5)
