With her recently published historical fiction novel, A Letter Away From Asaba, The Edinburgh Tab had the pleasure of interviewing her about her book, inspiration, and writing process. As she struggles to deal with the horrific and ceaseless deaths surrounding her, she takes sanctuary in receiving letters from her oldest friend, Onome, who is studying law at Kings College in London. The last sentence of this book written in Claudia’s acknowledgments is as follows; “through reading this historical fictional narrative, I hope it inspires people to seek out their history and immerse themselves into crucial historical discourse. To all the young Black girls wondering if you’ve made the right decision, or pondering on whether you’ll fit in at Edinburgh… I hope you see yourself in this podcast, and above all, I hope it brings you some comfort! Through a series of diary entries and letters these two young women attempt to come to grips with the massacre and fulfil their desire of publicising its existence in opposition to this censorship.Claudia Efemini is the author of A Letter Away From Asaba, a historical fiction on the censorship of the Asaba massacre during the Nigerian Civil War. It is one of the more interesting words in the English language, in that its connotative meaning can be either very negative or very positive. I am also honoured to have been granted the opportunity by Dr Velma McClymont herself to talk very briefly about myself as an author and ‘A Letter Away From Asaba’.

It was extremely hard to put this book down and 10x harder to not think about the story and its characters throughout the day. A Letter Away From Asaba , an epistolary novella, is a historical fictional narrative centred on the Asaba massacre of the Nigerian Civil War. I am so thrilled to announce that my debut novel ‘A Letter Away From Asaba’ will be published in spring 2023. Such a mindset demonstrates a lack of empathy and a lack of desire to make amends for the harm caused. Chioma experiences the Asaba massacre, an overlooked and traumatic event of the war, and is forced to confront issues of censorship, grief, and trust.

At McGill, I am looking forward to taking a variety of courses in history and political science exploring a range of areas such as African history, international relations, and indigeneity. The two converse back and forth, despite the heightening threats to their lives, about Asaba and the severe censorship in Britain. A second-year History and Politics student at the University of Edinburgh, Claudia is also one of the youngest published authors in Scotland. The podcast host Claudia Efemini, author, history undergrad and dear friend asked us questions that really challenged Esther and I to reflect on our experiences at The University of Edinburgh.
