About this deal

I heard nothing in Hydrasynth that isn't beat out by good contemporary plugins like Serum or Dune 3, or old but quality VA stuff like Microkorg. The second filter is a 12db per octave has a continuous sweep from either low pass > bandpass >high pass or low pass > notch > high pass, similar to the way the classic SEM filter worked. Also, some things just take learning, like the resonance needs to be balanced by some drive to sound good. There is the standard MIDI and USB/MIDI interfaces on the synth, but we go deeper and allow the use of CV/GATE interfaces for connecting to the modular world.

The "it's a plugin in a box" complaint is voiced often, but there's nothing wrong with it - and that's because the code that runs the Hydrasynth (and is responsible for the sound generation and the effects) is not available as a plugin.

With 2x different Filters (which can be used in Parallel or Serial mode) detailed sound shaping is simple on the Hydrasynth. The pads also indicate scales, patterns and more with colour-coding, making it as intuitive as it is enjoyable to play. It was clearly designed by someone who knows synthesizers and uses them, and wanted to build something they would enjoy to use. There's a main level with dedicated reverb and delay, another effects slot before this and after this.

Ashun Sound Machines introduces Hydrasynth, the eight-voice polyphonic wave-morphing synthesizer with three oscillators per voice, seemingly endless amount of modulation options, and many other unique features such as Mutators. I’m going out on a limb here and saying…poly AT and MPE devices all have learning/feel curves you have to leap. I was most taken by the wavetable sweeps, glassy digital textures, pads and electric pianos, many demonstrating the excellent reverb. Touch any key briefly, and a free-running envelope will progress through all its timed stages without further intervention.I have the same dilemma because: the explorer is around for 100 pounds less GBP, so remarkably cheap; battery powered is very appealing for certain scenarios,,,, vs, I could not give a crap about keys as I play Linnstrument; desktop is smaller so more convenient getting around with. If there's a shortcut key combo to jump to page 4 or page 9 of the system menu, I'd like to know that (as one random example). There are also three kinds of pulse width, some extremely unique, plus things like wave stacking for supersaw-like patches. Not only is this is an excellent synth for connecting to external controllers and sequencers; it’s an all-encompassing controllable instrument in its own right. The various ways the synth detunes voices to make them sound lush and drifty in a simulated analog-style way is also nicely done and fully adjustable.

The pads are much more expressive and playable than you’d think, there’s tons of useful and time saving short cuts, the mod matrix is robust, and the sound quality is great. It's hardly surprising that the Hydrasynth's factory patches set the scene with some impressive Vangelis tones, paying particular homage to the Blade Runner score.Rather than even a firmware fix, if ASM included a decal with these two points on future versions of the synth, that would make it so the synth is fully usable from the front panel without having to read the manual. It would also be super cool if the effects section had something added that digitally alter/degrade whatever wave was sent to it, like sample rate/bit rate decimation, but perhaps also modes which mimic directly the sort of digital grunge or grit of some past synths of old.

Applicable to any waveform, scanned or otherwise, it can serve up Supersaw-type effects and so much more.Something like Plogue Chipsynth MD should have pretty much the same sound as the Korg 707 (although not exactly the same because it's emulating a different DAC - I usually say DACs aren't that important, but it's important here because the DACs in these cases are terrible). I haven't heard anyone complain that the Yamaha GS1 or DK Synergy are somehow lacking in "mojo" because all the voices are accumulated digitally and converted at the same time.
