About this deal

His debut novel, ALICE THE CAT, will be published May 23, 2023 by Fitzroy Books, the MG and YA imprint of Regal House Publishing, recently named Foreword's Publisher of the Year.

At one point, the cat disappears gradually until nothing is left but its grin, prompting Alice to remark that "she has often seen a cat without a grin but never a grin without a cat". Alice the Cat is an engrossing read that seamlessly blends supernatural elements, emotional depth, and the complexities of human connections. It does, however, appear to cheer her up when it turns up suddenly at the Queen of Hearts' croquet field, and when sentenced to death baffles everyone by having made its head appear without its body, sparking a massive argument between the executioner and the King and Queen of Hearts about whether something that does not have a body can indeed be beheaded.

Carroll is believed to have visited St Christopher's church in Pott Shrigley, Cheshire, which has a stone sculpture resembling the pictorial cat in the book.

Alice the CAlice meets the Cheshire Cat in this striking illustration from The Nursery Alice, a shortened version of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1890). Soon after that Alice falls down the rabbit hole and waves goodbye to Dinah who almost falls down the rabbit hole as well.

She is the founder of the longest standing, award winning pet sitting business in Dublin – Maow Care and the founder of Ireland’s first cat-centric festival Dublin Cat Fair. The main character, seven-and-a-half-year-old Alice, finds herself in an unfamiliar place filled with strange creatures and quirky characters as she follows the White Rabbit down a rabbit hole. However, similar phrases have not been associated with any other areas of the country – no 'grinning like a Shropshire cat', for instance. Overcoming grief is one of the overarching themes of the novel and although the father and daughter get there in the end, it is a tough journey with plenty of bumps in the road.Well, then," the Cat went on, "you see a dog growls when it's angry, and wags its tail when it's pleased. At one point, the cat disappears gradually until nothing is left but its grin, prompting Alice to remark that she has often seen a cat without a grin but never a grin without a cat. T]aken from Lewis Carroll, we liken this theory to the strategy used by the Cheshire Cat in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland of making its body invisible to make the sentence "off with his head" pronounced by the Queen of Hearts impossible to execute . Cheshire Puss,’ [Alice] began, rather timidly, as she did not at all know whether it would like the name: however, it only grinned a little wider. I would also question the appropriateness of discussing the breast size of a twelve-year-old girl, as these types of body image discussions can come across as insensitive if they are not a necessary part of the story (it isn’t).

Alice the Cat masterfully unites elements of ghost stories, haunted houses, lost cats, Wonderland, psychic mediums, the spirit of Halloween, Ouija boards, the occult, and a girl's journey into the twilight of adulthood while grieving the death of her mother.

It is important to have relatable characters in Middle Grade novels and Tess will be attractive to many, even if they have never heard of the word ‘buttnuggets. Alice first encounters the Cheshire Cat at the Duchess's house in her kitchen, and later on the branches of a tree, where it appears and disappears at will, and engages Alice in amusing but sometimes perplexing conversation.
