About this deal

Throughout this more complicated sound design, dialogue is still audible and more direct than the Sony, but it could have slightly more sparkle to help it cut through. Likewise, there could be more detail to convey more subtle, atmospheric sounds.

Having a wide array of connection options is always a bonus as you will never know what you might want to connect to your soundbar in the future. The most convenient is HDMI: this is the connection favoured by most modern soundbars, even cheap ones. You will most often see an HDMI input (or maybe even two or three), which you connect your sources to (games console, Sky box etc) and an HDMI output, which passes the video signal to your TV. As ever, the more connections, the better, as it gives you more flexibility in the future.

Set-up and Operation

The Arc supports Dolby Atmos (although only via eARC) as well as both Google Assistant and Alexa. It can be fully integrated into a Sonos multiroom audio system and controlled via the excellent Sonos S2 app. The only caveat is that physical connectivity is limited to a single HDMI ARC/eARC port, with no HDMI or optical digital input available. Otherwise, this is an astonishing achievement in AV audio engineering. This connection also supports an audio return channel (ARC), simplifying setup and eliminating the need for additional cables. The HS214 also has a USB port, allowing you to play music directly from a USB drive. It also features an HDMI input, allowing you to connect it directly to your TV for the best possible audio quality. ARC/eARC also allows your main TV remote to control the basic volume and power functions of your soundbar via HDMI CEC (Consumer Electronics Control). Some soundbars come with their own remotes and/or have app control, but if your connection to your TV uses an optical cable, you may still be able to use your regular controller. Certain models, such as the Sonos Ray, can 'learn' to recognise the commands of both IR and RF remotes, but the set-up will depend on your TV manufacturer.

The Hisense HS214 2.1 channel soundbar offers a variety of connectivity options to meet your audio needs. The soundbar with inputs hub is all we need this season! Dolby Atmos is a relatively new surround-sound standard that expands upon the 5.1- and 7.1-channel setups previously offered by soundbars and other surround-sound systems. The main thing that Atmos adds is audio height: where other systems aim to surround you with audio to the side and rear, horizontally, Atmos extends that to sounds that come from above you. Watching Leonardo DiCaprio grapple with a bear in The Revenant on Blu-ray, that extra bit of heft means each blow and snarl has more impact and danger attached. But there are, of course, limitations to what the HS214 can replicate. In the opening scene of Unbroken, for example, the initial fly-past of the bomber has a restricted dynamic envelope that doesn’t crescendo as convincingly as the Sony HT-SF150 does. And although there’s a nice touch of low end with the Hisense, it doesn’t extend low enough to produce the cinematic rumble we would expect in this bombing raid. Turning up the bass won’t help in this regard either, as there’s a ceiling to how much this tiny woofer can handle.

It has been elegantly designed and is compact in size, making it easy to place and connect to your TV. This soundbar is perfect for 32-inch TVs or bigger. With a built-in subwoofer and two front-facing speakers this soundbar delivers 108W, 2.1ch sound that offers clear top and mid-range tones alongside deep, booming bass.

The soundstage is pleasingly wide thanks to the soundbar’s side-firing speakers and the dedicated centre channel ensures dialogue remains clearly intelligible. Alexa built-in provides a decent level of smart functionality to complement the HW-Q990B’s first-rate sound, while the new design of the bar, sub and rear speakers mean it looks a lot better than its 2021 predecessor. We would have liked to have seen a couple of additional HDMI inputs and support for 4K/120 and Variable Refresh Rate passthrough, but the HW-Q990B is a roaring success regardless. There’s a newer model available – the HW-Q990C– but given the price difference, we’re still recommending last year’s model.Közösségi hálók sütijei Ezek a sütik lehetővé teszik számunkra, hogy kényelmesen összekapcsoljuk Önt a közösségi média profiljával, és például lehetővé teszik, hogy termékeket és szolgáltatásokat osszon meg barátaival és családtagjaival.
