About this deal

The Trail Runner Free head torch with 400 lumen and a light image optimized for running with Silva Intelligent Light that gives you dual light sources, both strong lighting at a distance and a wide light where you put your feet. We're working out what we think about Silva's Trail Runner Free 2 Ultra Headtorch, we'll add our comments here in due course. Customized light distribution: With the 2:nd generation of Trail Runner Free, the cooling has been optimized with a more powerful cooler that lets the lamp produce up to 550 lumen (depending on battery type) while keeping its comfort and low weight. Our ultra runners have been an important part of the design process and the Trail Runner Free 2 series is made for running in every aspect. All three headlamps in this series feature Silva Intelligent Light. This means that you get a double light beam technology in your headlamp, with light settings that are perfect for running. Our unique combination of a long reach spotlight and a close flood-light, results in less head movement, better control, improved balance, less fatigue and higher speed. Before we go too much further it's worth mentioning that there are a variety of models within the Trail Runner Free range, but within this review we'll be looking specifically at the Trail Runner Free H. I'll intermittently reference other models where it's relevant, but these aren't models that we've used. For more information on these, beyond what we've said, visit silvasweden.uk Brightness and Burn Time

The Silva Trail Runner Free H is a versatile and capable running-specific headlamp with a powerful, dual beam and a separate battery compartment that uses rechargeable or alkaline batteries. Its cordless design is practical and comfortable, and configuration of the battery compartment offers a variety of setup options for long outings. The reason being weight, comfort, price but most importantly the Hybrid battery combination and the flexibility it brings. Using the battery off the head is a real plus of the Trail Runner Free. Headlamps generally use rechargeable batteries or single-use AAA or AA batteries. There are a few varieties of rechargeable batteries, including Petzl’s proprietary Core rechargeable battery, the 18650 lithium-ion rechargeable battery found in many of the headlamps above, and other types of lithium-ion rechargeable batteries. The commonly used 2,600-milliampere hour 18650 battery is popular for its reliability, long run time, and ability to be recharged many times — all of which are valuable to a trail runner.

Best Running Headlamps

When it comes to brightness and burn time, the Trail Runner Free H has three settings. Being a Scandinavian brand, hence used to developing products that will be used throughout a wide range of temperatures, Silva provide additional performance stats for cold and hot environments. Most people will be aware that the cold has a negative effect on battery life, but very few people will ever have seen a quantifiable measure on exactly what that may be, so hats off to Silva here, because it's an important factor to take into account during the winter months. On this fifth generation of our original running headlamp, we present a new kind of technology where the power cord is integrated into the headband. We call it free technology – a comfortable headlamp experience without distracting cords or tangled wires. No hassle – Just free the energy. Trail Runner Free is the fifth generation of Trail Runner, our popular head torch for running, both in urban environments and the forest. Because the head torch is water resistant according to IPX5, it can withstand heavy rain. The lamp itself is small, rotates up and down easily (even with gloves on) and the switch on the left-side is easy to press for illumination. Green shows good power in the battery, red shows recharging or new batteries are required.

Our only complaint with this headlamp is its aesthetic. We can hardly ding something so wonderful just on looks. However, it does remind us of a kid’s toy headlamp. She likes the ability to swap in AAA batteries because this means the head torch can be used for longer adventures through the night. The weight is super-light coming in at 125g with the battery.Every part of the headlamp has been compressed and the unit only weighs 55 grams. We're working out what we think about Silva's Trail Runner Free 2 Hybrid Headtorch, we'll add our comments here in due course. Gram counters who want an ultrarunning-worthy headlamp should look to the Nitecore UT32, which is yet another offering built on the powerful 18650 lithium-ion rechargeable battery. This headlamp tips the scales at 144 grams while offering a spotlight, floodlight, and up to 1,100 lumens at its brightest setting. It can also provide more than 400 lumens for a night and a half. If you need to go longer, no problem — the battery is easy to change in the field. See what we mean about the golden era of headlamp lighting and batteries? Case in point right here. Other reviewers have speculated how hard it might be to replace the wiring, given that it's integral to the headband. Whilst this is - to an extent - an interesting question, and we should definitely be thinking more about how we can repair the equipment we own, my question in return would be - if you break any other brand of headtorch's wiring - how easy would that be to repair? Generally, not very, so I don't think it's a concern peculiar to this design. Battery life, comfort, and available lumens are all considerations when choosing the right headlamp for your running needs. We’ve scoured the marketplace for the best of the best, and then a small team of iRunFar gear testers took them out for miles upon miles of sunrise, sunset, and nighttime runs. Below, we’ve rounded up our top recommendations for the best headlamps for running.
