With a population of around 16,000 (nearly half of the 40,000 that live on the entire island), Zante Town is the most metropolitan place you’ll find in Zakynthos, but it still feels like a small town in many ways. Whether you get a hotel and stay in Zante town, or you’re just stopping by on a day trip around the island, Zante Town should definitely make it on your Zakynthos itinerary. As you make your way to the airport, ensure you have booked your transportation in advance to avoid any last-minute hassles. Tipping is appreciated, and you can leave around 10% of the bill if you are satisfied with the service provided. The tavern here serves up reasonably priced food, cold beer and tasty drinks. In our experience, the food was not that great, but the view is superb, so it’s a great place for a drink and to relax in the sun. Many people believe that the ship was smuggling contraband cigarettes and ran aground after being pursued by the Greek navy. The truth is somewhat different. The ship was sailing from Kefalonia to Albania when it suffered a mechanical failure on the return journey. With no control and bad weather preventing any rescue the ship ran aground at Navagio on October 2, 1980. Zante is home to the endangered loggerhead sea turtles, also known as Caretta caretta. These magnificent creatures can be spotted nesting on the island’s pristine beaches, particularly on Laganas Beach in the south. Definitely not the most scenic city in all of Greece, Zakynthos (Zante) Town may not immediately charm visitors, but it does have its own local flare. This is a hands-on cooking experience. Although an earthquake destroyed the church in 1893, the building was reconstructed in 1948. The church hosts impressive frescoes as well. Byzantine Museum The capital city of Zakynthos is a great little town right on the sea. This is the largest city on the island, but in our opinion, it’s not the best place to stay. There are plenty of tourist hotels and restaurants here, but it’s not on the nicest beach and it’s more of a bustling port city than a tourist attraction. Zakynthos Town, the island’s capital and main port, offering a variety of shops, restaurants, and cultural attractions. The exact date of its construction is still unknown, but it was destroyed by the invading Turks in 1480, and then restored in 1515. Leaving Zante

Hidden gems of Zante

Greece is one of the best countries in the world for cuisine, so it’s no surprise that pretty much every island in this archipelagic nation has some amazing restaurants, and Zante is no different. Here are a few of our favourites. Porto Paradiso (Alykes Beach) Tsilivi and Planos are another one of the most popular beach destinations in Zante. The family-friendly, calm, shallow, 2 kilometre long “Blue Flag” beach of Tsilivi is one of the most beautiful and safest to swim in. There are many accommodation options in both towns and great restaurants along the sea here as well. The reefs and beaches around Zakynthos are home to one of the oldest lifeforms on Earth, the Loggerhead Sea Turtle. This beautiful creature can be spotted in the Zakynthos Marine Park or coming ashore to lay eggs in the evening on many bays (even popular ones) around Zakynthos and surrounding islands. While there are a few stretches of sand in Zante Town and nearby, these are more of the “Urban-Style” beaches and definitely aren’t the best beaches in Zakynthos (like Alykes Beach, Navagio Beach, Keri Beach, Xigia Beach and Gerakas Beach). If you want to see the most stunning bays and coves around the island then I recommend renting a car or renting a boat in Zakynthos.
