About this deal

Ok It’s my first Uke and it’s a gift from my wife but, it’s ok, I can learn a lot of things, the sound it’s not bad and it stays in tune for a long time. The Makala Dolphin is a decent, affordable instrument from one of the top names in entry-level ukes. There were a few minor imperfections here and there, but these issues were purely cosmetic and don’t affect tone or playability. Because this uke has been in the hands of a toddler, it stands to reason that it has been dropped, trodden on and generally abused.

Players interested in a larger version of the MK-S should check out the MK-C (concert) or the MK-T (tenor). Yeah, it might seem a little weird and perhaps the D’s a bit resonant but hey; now I have a great little knock about “Mandolele” that I just can’t put down. Players seeking an instrument with a bit more substance may want to consider the KA-15S (also from Kala) or the highly-rated Donner and Hricane ukes in the table below. Please give us the reason for your assessment in the following text box and – if possible – your e-mail address for further questions. The geared machineheads offer good tuning stability, as do the fitted Aquila strings (notwithstanding the usual ‘stretching’ that occurs).

I’ve found it be really well suited to a bit of fingerpicking mainly due to the volume that you can get from it.This ukulele is SUPER sturdy so can withstand some pretty boisterous playing and sound exploring, it’s colourful and also makes a good sound and holds it’s tuning well. All purchases made before Christmas 2022 will come with a voucher for free access to our full online kids ukulele course! Der Grund des Kaufes gerade dieser Ukulele war: sie hat ein breiteres Griffbrett für meine nicht gerade kleinen Hände, einen Tonabnehmer und man hat die Moglichkeit einen Gurt zu befestigen. Aimed squarely at a serious beginner, or developing players seeking a low-cost, quality ukulele, with a built in pickup system. If you enjoy this blog, donations are welcomed to allow me to invest more time in bringing you ukulele articles.

The tie-bar bridge might be an issue for some newcomers to ukulele who would prefer a slotted bridge but regular readers of Ukulele Go will know that I’m not a slotted bridge type of guy.If you’re the kind of person that doesn’t bash the strings quite so hard though you’re going to get the most out of this uke. In fact I’ve found myself playing this ukulele standing far more than any other that I own over the past few weeks.

I want to graduate myself to a more expensive Kala, but until I can afford that, I am perfectly happy with my Makala. I know I don't like preaching about strings, and that you should experiment, but these have quite thick tops and the Aquila power can really drive them to get a good tone and volume.Originally I bought the Makala MK-S for my dad, he’d expressed an interest in learning ukulele very shortly after I started playing. I recently got a Makala MK-P model Uke and have to say i honestly love the little Pinnaple shapped bugger. Turns out, I love it, and this was the smartest move I’ve made to ensure I didn’t spend a ton of money on a hobby that isn’t for me. So I will happily find myself still strumming this when at home - perhaps more than I do some of my other instruments. The character and sound of each uke is so different, but we have fitted Aquila strings and they do great duets (amongst other tunes, we have already got ‘Psycho Killer’ down, and are working on ‘Anarchy in the UK’.
